Are You the President of Your Career?
What does it mean to lead at the highest level?
When you’ve had the honor and privilege to serve as President, CEO, Owner, and an Executive Leader within any organization, it’s a very humbling yet inspiring experience. Leading at the highest level doesn’t mean you have to serve within the C-Suite or on a Board of Directors, rather you know who you are, where your career is headed, can make and implement decisions that are right for you. It means you are a visionary who can take bold directions, make tough choices, evaluate risk vs reward, while still showing empathy towards others. Being the President of your career is all about leading with purpose, taking charge of your own career, exemplifying confidence, and being vocally self-aware when you need to pivot. Presidents rarely ask for permission; they move with decisiveness and focus on accomplishing their goals.
Here are five quick tips to remember during President’s Day:
- You are the President of your career: Meaning you get to decide your career path, what opportunities to take, what ideas to explore, where you want to be, and you get to implement the strategy and roadmap.
- Lead with vision and purpose: Write down your vision and keep it in front of you and implement the right level of objectives and initiatives to help bring your vision to life. Share your vision and purpose with those who will help advance and complement your cause. Good leaders also return the favor for others.
- Evaluate risk vs reward: Avoid making observations, comments and giving feedback by properly reviewing data, talking with stakeholders, researching, testing and learning to make the best-informed decisions.
- Remain humble and self-aware: Leaders are confident, yet modest, willing to acknowledge their mistakes, and are aware of their shortcomings. Leaders are constantly learning, evolving and improving their skills, communication, and amplifying their executive presence.
- Move with focus and determination: Being the President of your career empowers you to remain laser focus on your goals and determined in achieving any task needed to advance. You are clear and decisive in your actions and move with a greater sense of purpose.
